Feral Hog Hunts
Feral hogs came from two sources. Early settlers brought pigs into this part of Texas and allowed them to range freely. Some of these escaped and became feral. Then in the 1930s, European wild hogs, “Russian boars,” were imported by ranchers and sportsmen for sport hunting. Some of these escaped from the game ranches and began breeding with feral hogs. Because of the crossbreeding, there are no true Russian wild hogs left in Texas.

A worthy adversary
Wild hogs may look basically the same as domestic pigs and they can vary in hair color and pattern. A mature wild hog can reach a shoulder height of 36 inches and weigh from 60 to over 400 pounds. The smaller ones are generally better eating. Males are normally larger than females of the same age. Male hogs (boars) have four continually growing tusks (two on the top, two on the bottom). The continual rubbing of the top tusks against the bottom tusks sharpens the lower tusks to become as sharp as a knife. They use their tusks for digging and rooting in the ground and for fighting with rivals. Their eyesight is not that great, but have very good hearing and sense of smell.
